Classes for Children
Rocks and gulls collage.
Charlotte's Shells after Winifred Nicholson.
Student working on her art project.
Our goal is for our young artists to both learn and have a great time doing it! With a small group of children, sparks of creativity can be seized upon and used as jumping-off points for greater exploration and expression. A child's meandering creativity is respected and hopefully enriched by our guidance. Our small classes enable us to teach real skills effectively. We have the time and freedom to stop and discuss a piece of art or a period in art history at the moment when it becomes relevant in a child's work.
Art By the Bay

Creatures of the Beach (Ages 6-9)
Inspired by depictions of sea creatures from art history, we will draw, paint and collage a menagerie of strange animals in their environment. We will also think about what washes up every day on the beach and how we can depict them.
People on the Beach (Ages 10-13)
Taking inspiration from artists in history, we will look at the interaction of sand, waves, and sky with people on the shore. Using acrylic, watercolor, pencil, markers and collage we will explore this theme in a variety of media.
We provide all the art materials. Children are welcome to bring snacks and beverages, but no nuts please!

SATURDAYS

June 10, 17, 24
Ages 6 - 9, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Ages 10 - 13, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Using the idea of the sea, and the art that it has inspired, a morning class for children 6 to 9 years of age will create images such as a sail boat climbing a wave with a full moon overhead.
In the afternoon class, students ages 10 to 13 will take up the same theme with a different and more elaborate approach. For instance, examining the importance of the horizon line and proportion in the interpretation of a young person at the beach.
