Classes for Children
Our goal is for our young artists to both learn and have a great time doing it! With a small group of children, sparks of creativity can be seized upon and used as jumping-off points for greater exploration and expression. A child's meandering creativity is respected and hopefully enriched by our guidance. Our small classes enable us to teach real skills effectively. We have the time and freedom to stop and discuss a piece of art or a period in art history at the moment when it becomes relevant in a child's work.
Learning to Fly
Children, Ages 6-10
Saturdays, 10:00am-12:00pm
September 26 • October 3, 10, 17, 24
$175 for 5-class series
In this class our young artists will create work inspired by American artists Faith Ringold and Katherine Bradford. Taking from Ringold’s book Tar Beach they will make their version of a story quilt, imagining themselves flying above their homes with family, friends and pets as they survey the world below them. And looking at Bradford’s Super Girl paintings, they will depict themselves as super girls and super boys. Dreamy!
Vincent’s Sunflowers
Ages 10-14
Sunday September 20th, 1pm-3pm
$40 for the class
Our young artists will follow in the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh by directly observing sunflowers in a vase and capturing what they see in acrylic on canvas. This will be an indoor activity.
Van Gogh was drawn to sunflowers and painted 11 versions during his career. He felt that they had the warmth of the sun and represented friendship. In fact, most of the sunflower paintings he made were to welcome another famous painter and friend Paul Gauguin to his home.
Bonnard’s Garden
Ages 10-14
Sunday October 11th, 1pm-3pm
$40 for the class
Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) was fascinated by color. In his paintings the sky would not necessarily be blue and the trees would not be brown and green.
Taking inspiration from his work, we will go outside and make sketches of the garden and grounds of the school, making note of the radical colors we wish to use in our compositions. We will then return indoors to make paintings on easels using acrylic paint on canvas.
Painting (In Wonderful Ways!)
Ages 6-9
Saturdays, 10:00am-12:00pm
November 21, 28 • December 5, 12, 19
$175 for 5-class series
Sticks, corn cobs, string, paint brushes and sponges – we will use a wide variety of materials to drip, splatter, flick, dab and spread paint to create an image. Looking at artists such as Jackson Pollock and Pat Steir, we will discover how the process of making art is key to its creation.
Pop Portraits: From Paint to Polaroids
Ages 10-14
Sundays 10:00am-12:00pm
November 22, 29 • December 6, 13, 20
$175 for 5-class series
Our artists will make portraits inspired by Andy Warhol and Pop Art from the 1960s. In the spirit of the genre, they will make portraits using polaroid cameras and acrylic paint to create high-color and high-intensity images of themselves!
