Adult Classes

Golden Gate after Joan Brown.

Everyone can learn and make art! Many of the students that we have taught at senior centers have never taken art classes before. It is wonderful to see the speed at which progress is made, and the joy and pride that come with it.

Our approach is to draw upon the rich history of art for inspiration in our projects. We begin each class by looking at the work of past and present artists and use their art as a jumping off point for each project.

The Collage Still-Life

MONDAYS, 9:30am - 11:30am

May 8, 15, 22
June 5, 12, 19

In this class we will explore the genre of the Still-Life, constructed through the technique of collage, a major innovation of the twentieth century. The artists who will guide and inspire us along the way will include Giorgio Morandi, Anne Ryan and Georges Braque.Taking a cue from the Cubist Movement that revolutionized the art-making process at the beginning of the twentieth century, we will investigate the use of everyday materials in creating a collage still-life.

Romantic Landscapes

WEDNESDAYS, 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

May 10, 17, 24, 31
June 7, 14

Step by step we will look at Romantic artists from the 19th century - from German painter Casper David Friedrich, to American painters Albert Ryder and Edward Mitchell Bannister. We will learn about what inspired the Romantic movement and how it shaped the idea of an individual's relationship with nature.

In the process we will learn how to paint moonlight on water, clouds covering stars, and misty mountain tops - all aspects of nature that inspired awe in the Romantic artists.
